The issue – single glazed windows in a poor condition

Sian’s flat is in a Grade II listed building in Hampstead. The windows were in a poor state, some of them couldn’t be opened and they were also single glazed. Sian wanted to replace them with double glazed sliding sash windows which exactly replicated the original style.

The challenge – gaining planning permission and replicating highly bespoke windows

Sian’s building is Grade II Listed as it is of special architectural interest. Sashed were able to create highly bespoke windows with an unusual external trim to exactly replicated the original windows.

The solution – highly bespoke double glazed windows from Sashed

In all, four sliding sash windows and one French casement window were replaced with new double glazed units. The windows have astragal glazing bars with warm edge spacers – to make them look like authentic Georgian glazing bars. Two of the sliding sash windows were also different from the norm in that the top sashes were smaller that the bottom ones, instead of the usual arrangement of them being equal in size.

The result – a brighter, warmer and quieter home

The new double glazed windows have made the flat much warmer and quieter while retaining the integrity of the architecture. The new double glazed windows have security features built in so that the old security bars over the windows are no longer needed. Commenting on the project, Sian says, “I love my new windows from Sashed. They look really authentic and they have made the flat much warmer and considerably quieter and there is so much more light now because I no longer need security bars over my windows, which is fantastic. The windows are also a joy to use, they slide up and down smoothly and easily.”

• The team installed the new windows and doors and made good inside and outside the flat.
